As part of the design project, I have chosen to research Shanan Campanaro, a contemporary designer behind the New York based textile firm "Eskayel" founded in 2008. She creates eco friendly furnishings built to "... last and bring value through innovation, artistry, and beauty into residential and commercial spaces" (http://eskayel.com/more/)
All of her designs created collaboratively with her family originate from paintings made in her Brooklyn studio, inspired by travel and nature.
"The design process usually starts with painting from photographs taken during traveling, and then deriving color schemes from nature. Water plays a major roll in the creative process, painting with aqueous inks and often soaking the paper completely, letting colors bleed through and blend into one another." - Shanan Campanaro, http://eskayel.com/more/
One of their main manifestos is how their work reflects and environmentally friendly effort, with every aspect of their work being as eco neutral as poissible, from the vinyl and VOC free wallcovering substrates and water based inks, to the local wallpaper production and made to order products to minimise overproduction and and reduce waste.

These prints from the Roman Ram - Greyscale collection stood out to me due to their contrast to the colourful properties of her other work. The minimalistic monochromatic tones create a real sense of calm and flowing on the prints, which is appealing as on furnishings such as sofas and cushions will bring tranquility into the intended living space in the home, most likely to be an office or a living room. Therefore these unique made to order designs are specifically created to fulfil a relaxed feel.
I particularly like the greyscale tones as there are small abstract images created inside the prints through the use of more and less intense shades of grey, and mirrored printing. This technique constructs symmetry lines in the design with an intrigue to them, making it clear to see how each design can create a centre piece in any room they are deigned for.
Main Influences
In an article by Design Milk (http://design-milk.com/friday-five-shanan-campanaro-eskayel/) Campanaro describes that her visual appetites are fueled by 5 main influences; water, the artist Rop Van Mierlo, Travel and the natural world, Textiles, and Georgia O’Keeffe.
1. Water - watercolours, pool water & reflecting light, the ocean, drinking water, surfing, diving, her star sign 'Aquarius', the book Nyodo Blue
2. Rop Van Mierlo - watercolour work, discovered via the book WILD ANIMALS
3. Travel and the Natural World - married in Gili Meno, Indonesia; colours of the sunset, sunrise, the sea, sand, "I can see them whenever I close my eyes."
4. Textiles - Woven, Ikat, Batik, embroidery, mud cloth, woven types of pattern from indigenous cultures
5. Georgia O’Keeffe - her life and way of living, independence, daily practice, her age (lived a long time, and incredibly well), natural beauty and aging.
