Week Six - Weekly Evaluation

Write down the similarities and differences in approach between the first and second projects.

The approach in terms of how the 2 week rotation was presented to us was better in the media brief. In design it was roughly outlined what we were going to be doing for the two weeks, I had no idea about anything of assessment or how we were to produce our work, or how we were going to progress with the work from the first day. Whereas in media it was clearly structured how each of out timetabled workshop sessions were to be used and what we could do in them.

In regards to my personal approach to the two projects, I think after having done one rotation of design therefore and understanding the structure a bit better of the two week process, I went into the media project a bit more 'ready' to explore and experiment than I did with design.

Identify overlapping themes, particularly in your personally directed work: are there connections between ideas, approaches to materials or attitudes that

you have you used in both projects. If so, what are these? If not, what are the main differences?

I don't think there are any connections between the work I produced in terms of themes as in design I created a art driven piece of work that focused on colour and texture and interior design, however in media my work was more based around a comment on the media itself and how as a society we are driven by obsession of figures and idols. This meant I wasn't working with actual creation of colours and drawings or paintings as much, and had more work using technology like premiere pro and photoshop. In my opinion, due to the fact I am an extremely inquisitive and experimental worker I enjoy exploring new materials more than I do using old ones, meaning I didn't want to use the same thing twice or have any overlaps between my projects. I also wanted to explore different methods and creative processes over the two projects, which actually ended up occurring naturally due to what I learnt from the design project, and how I took that information about how to improve into the media project.

Compare how you have used your time between this project and the last, and consider how you have managed the projects during these weeks:

  • planning and organisation - I think both times I managed my time well, and used my timetabled studio days well, however something I need to work on for the next project is my plan for what I need to achieve in my non-timetabled private study days

  • being open to different ideas and potential changes in direction - in the design rotation I was a lot more focused in one one idea as I didn't really have enough ideas to be able to play around with. However in media, I learnt from my mistake of the design project and decided to try and be a lot more free thinking and accepting of different creative journey influences. This allowed me to explore several different ideas throughout the initial stages of the first week before I decided on my idea.

  • exploring and evaluating different material possibilities - I explored a lot more in media as I had access to all of the technological devices, whereas in design I was a lot more restricted in what I used. I could have definitely explored further, even though I did do several material comparisons such as looking at watercolour against water based markers, and used inks to produce my final outcomes.

  • creating more complex or unexpected outcomes - In both media and design, I don't think my outcomes were particularly unexpected as I work in a very structured way meaning I know exactly what I'm doing in terms of my creative process most of the time, or at least what I want to be achieving.

  • developing an understanding of different artists and designers working in a similar area - in design although I did only use one artist overall to influence my work, I feel like this is all I needed to fuel and create the initial spark to begin my project. However in media, my research was all done rapidly mostly on a computer, and a lot of it is undocumented. I think this is mainly down to the fact that as I am confident on technology using the computer search engines, I work in a very rapid way and flick between webpages quickly to enable me to find exactly what I need or am looking for in a short space of time. This can mean however, that in the end I may miss things or overlook certain things on a page, or completely miss what I am looking for. For this reason, I think it would be good to branch out into a larger range of resources such as books and newspapers, magazines and journals.

  • presenting and/or explaining your ideas to others - I think in both instances, I managed to convey my ides in a well structured confident manner, and I'm happy with how I managed to convey my results of each project
