New Project and End of Project Review

REVIEW

Looking ahead into the new term, I of course find myself swamped with written blog work I should have done at the end of December. However thankfully, I wrote a lot of notes down in my sketchbook meaning it will be easy on here to complete an end of project review and elaborate on the points I made.

Notes written in preparation for my group crit, on my chronological journey and processes in my art so far

When considering where I could take my work further, I realised (before my group assessment) i could take it forward into several directions. This included the possibility of replacing the pen lines on my work with the faces onto paint surfaces with a thicker line in black colour instead of biro to create a bolder image, particularly on large scale works. I also reflected on my use of tracing paper as a material when working with the faces as an overlay and think that really I need to find a way of eliminating the use of the tracing paper enabling the faces to be transfered straight onto the desired background, therefore removing an element of unclearness and blurred aesthetic due to the tracing paper. I think i do definitely have more ideas that are more thoughtful in terms of contextual improvements and actual techniques rather than just small tweaks, however these wil become apparent when i begin to mindmap the new project, making links between the two projects.

In terms of the work i did with tapes, I had a few ideas of where to take the work further to, including a series which in my head I call "one of these things" due to the fact that I would have an array of similar objects such as tapes, records, zips, whatever it may be, and display them in a very simplistic and 'perfectionist' style way, making for example a 4X5 grid of these objects, However, by removing one of these objects and replacing it with a completely foreign object to the series, it would be clear to the viewer the object does not belong in this work, completing the main intention of the work (or the one i intend it to have) being a comment on society and appearance today, with the pressures to fit in in terms of personality and appearance. Currently I am not sure what statement I want to make about this, whether it be questioning appearance as a social construct and trying to simply bring it to the attention of the audience as a problem in need of a resolution, or just that i want to comment on the fact that some people do stand out (not "don't belong) from others, but that we should embrace it. This way, by encapsulating the foreign object in a piece of artwork, it gives a certain beauty to the piece, as you allow the 'misfit' to be admired with the other 'normal' pieces.

Ideas in notebook for new topic "Here and Now"

Looking forward to the new project after a lot of internal mental reflection, I am certain of a few key areas I need to knuckle down and address in order to succeed this term. The first of which is having a broader range of ideas to begin with, as I appreciate the fact that last project I was fortunate enough to be able to find an idea amongst a rabble of thoughts that i eventually liked and could work with, however to maximise time and work production planning and continual writing of ideas is key. I can do this by mindmapping, listing, and not taking my sketchbook too seriously in order to create a free and easy space to work into and work from. I also need to free up and experiment a lot more with the materials I use this term, which can only really happen when I have a clear strategy and vision of the work I want to create, otherwise I tend to just end up using a material for the sake of it.

What do I want to look at and achieve this project/term? Questions and goals...

  • discover how I can fully bring music into my artwork, does it have to be visual representation of the work?

  • how can i continue my previous work and expand it further, bringing in context and background and making it relevant to the new topic title?

  • what specific areas do I want to explore?

  • how can i move away from a 'smaller' more basic, unrelated random small pieces of work kind of way of working and make my work more relevant to the real art world today (and better than before)?

  • Make work i actually like and value!
