"Together they create a dialogue of what it is to embark on a journey for a better life"
What I particularly like about this artists work is the idea of creating a "dialogue" through his artwork, representing something. In this case it is built around the idea of illegal immigration and visual portrayal of memories. However I can also link this to my 'mask' idea with my project as the choice to have clearly painted and shaped human figures with abstracted faces creates a certain reaction out of me (a mixture of uncomfortableness and intrigue) which i think is the ind of thing I will want to draw from people when I make my own work. I think this is not only down to the physical abstraction of the face, but use of varying textures and patterns of the composition of the face and facial features, including the juxtaposition of geometrical shapes in odd and unrealistic sizes to shock and stand out.
I can link this series of work to an earlier artist, Joshua Edwards, who used steampunk style cogs and wheels to abstract parts of the human face. the effect was also similar and that of intrigue and deep thought into the placement of the obstruction, and what this represents - perhaps questioning or obstructing and identity or secret. I think this would be interesting to explore in my own artwork, applying this idea of obstruction to the face but only partially covering the face, therefore being extremely selective of which parts and features to display, and perhaps explore the effect of this.
