In a short 10 question survey, I asked my peers and wider circle of mainly young adolescents, but some older adults too, to answer my survey on identity and the way they see themselves. It also briefly touches on metaperceptions, which is how people percieve other people perceptions of themselves.
I actually got some surprising outcomes and I was surprised how open people can be when it in an anonymous response. From analysing the data gathered anonymously, I need to decide what is most helpful and what can be gathered into my art I have learnt the following:
The majority of people have felt self conscious about their physical appearance in their life, with the majority also having something they wish they could change
features people wish they could change are things such as:
"more muscular"
weight (less and more)
height
nose
lips
legs
skin
feet
neck
ears
body hair
chin
physical masking includes:
make up (greatest proportion of answers to Q4 was makeup of some kind...)
tatoos
hair dye
baggy clothes to hide
hair
shaving
People want to change their appearance due to:
wanting to look healthy with age
feeling self conscious and uncomfortable
Society and image of conventional beauty
to avoid comments made about the feauture
Commercialised ideas of beauty
personal insecurities "not feeling like the outside matches the inside"
self respect and attract the opposite gender
personal fitness
self confidence/satisfaction
comparisons to others
A lot of people have felt like they don't fit into a certain situation
The majority of people think their exterior appearance suits and matches their interior identity, however a minority (36%) do not
